Notes on the ingredients found in PMSoothe

BLACK COHOSH: (Cimicifuga racemosa)
Black Cohosh has been popular for centuries in the treatment of 'female disorders'.
It is believed to have significant anti-inflammatory effects, and to also exert a mild estrogenic effect, hence it's popularity in treating both the symptoms of menopause and pre-menstrual syndrome.

WILD YAM: (Dioscorea villosa)
Wild Yam is often recommended by naturopathic physicians for its ability to reduce the symptoms of cramping that accompany the onset of menses. It also contains diosgenin; a pre-cursor to androgenic and estrogenic hormones.

LICORICE:  (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
The estrogenic activity of licorice root is well proven, as is its effect in inducing a regular ovulation cycle in women who previously had either a sporadic or non-existent pattern of ovulation.  Licorice also has diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties which have made it popular as a natural treatment for pre-menstrual syndrome.

PASSION FLOWER: (Passiflora incarnata)
Has a well demonstrated ability to act as a nervine sedative.  Passion flower is often used in combination with chamomile as they appear to have a synergistic calming effect on the nerves which tend to become frayed during the pre-menstrual period.

SAW PALMETTO: (Serenoa repens)
Most people recognize saw palmetto as the herbal treatment for an enlarged prostate gland in men.  Few are aware that it also has an excellent reputation among traditional healers for its ability to decrease ovarian and uterine irritability and to relieve dysmennorhea and other ovarian dysfunctions.

SKULLCAP: (Scutellaria lateriflora)
Skullcap enjoys a reputation as a 'nerve tonic' and often appears in formulas that are designed to promote a restful night's sleep. It's mild analgesic action helps to reduce the aches and pains that are caused by muscle cramps that accompany pre-menstrual syndrome.

CHAMOMILE: (Matricaria chamomilla)
Chamomile is one of the most respected herbs that naturopathic physicians have at their disposal.  This reputation is deserved, as chamomile has well-proven properties that include a toning effect on uterine tissue, a nervine sedative effect and an anti-inflammatory action that justifies its place in any good product for pre-menstrual syndrome.

SQUAW VINE: (Mitchella repens)
Squaw vine was extensively used by traditional American Indian healers for hundreds of years to treat painful menstruation and the threat of miscarriage.  It was also widely used by many tribes to ensure that childbirth would be easier and free of possible parturition problems.
