MDR, or Multi-Drug Resistant bacteria are appearing at an alarming rate, and at the admission of infectious-disease specialists, there is little reason to be optimistic that pharmaceutical research will provide any new solutions in the foreseeable future. According to Dr. Alexander Tomasz, a highly-respected infectious disease researcher; "these resistance mechanisms can find their way from one bacterium to another through a variety of microbial gene transfer mechanisms. Bacteria resistant to many of our drugs can travel over large geographic distances and reach high incidence in certain parts of the world. A bacterial pathogen resistant to all chemotherapeutic agents is no longer science fiction." It's now time to look back at the other technologies that were being used before penicillin and its younger relatives became widely-available. Perhaps the medical profession is suffering from widespread amnesia! Many health care professionals seem to have forgotten about the universal antibiotic; namely silver. Before the arrival of the 'wonder drug' penicillin, silver in a
colloidal form was being used successfully to treat a wide range of conditions caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Antibiotics, in their pharmaceutical sense, are very limited in their effect. Most varieties are effective against just half a dozen specific organisms or so, and are limited to bacteria and certain types of fungal infection. Antibiotics have no effect against viral or parasitic infections. Colloidal Silver, on the other hand, is capable of killing over 650 microorganisms tested so far, including many viruses and parasites. It can accomplish this without any negative side-effects to the consumer either! And, these microbes have proven to be unable to develop a resistance or immunity to silver, unlike antibiotics. From his bacteriological research using silver, Dr. Henry Crooks concluded "I know of no microbe that is not killed in laboratory experiments within six minutes." Dr. Harry Margraf, a biochemist who worked with the late Dr. Carl Moyer at the Washington University Department of Surgery during the 1970s researching effective treatment for burn victims states; "Silver is the best all around germ fighter that we have." Silver preparations are now used in 70% of the burn centers here in the US. As Colloidal Silver was available as an OTC preparation before 1938, the FDA allows its continued sale provided that it is manufactured by the same methods and labeled in the same manner as they were back then. The list of conditions for which Colloidal Silver was used in the 'pre- antibiotic' age is lengthy: Appendicitis, Bladder irritation, Blepharitis, Burns, Chronic cystitis, Chronic eczema, Colitis, Dermatitis, Diarrhea, Enlarged prostate, Furunculosis, Gonorrhea, Hemorrhoids, Impetigo, Influenza, Lesion healing, Nasal catarrh, Ophthalmology, Para-Typhoid, Pruritus, Rhinitis, Ringworm, Septicemia, Shingles, Sprue, Tonsillitis, Urticaria, Vincent's Angina and Whooping Cough to name just a few. More recent research has shown Colloidal Silver to be effective against the following specific organisms: Adenovirus, Aspergillus Niger, Bacillus Typhosus, Bovine Rotavirus, Candida Albicans, Endamoeba Histolytica (Cysts), Escherichia Coli, Legionella Pneumophila, Poliovirus 1 (Sabin Strain), Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Salmonella, Spore-forming bacteria, Staphylococcus Aureas, Streptococcus faecalis and Vegetative B. Cereus cells. Part of the reason why silver fell from favor with the introduction of antibiotics was the limitations of the production technology at that time. It was not then yet possible to produce a stable colloid of pure silver. The size of silver particle that could be produced was not yet small enough to stay in a true colloidal suspension. Results were therefore conflicting and unreliable. To get around this problem, manufacturers used mild silver protein or ionic silver as their source, and added stabilizers to keep the silver in suspension. While these often produced the required results, stabilizers reduced the silver's antimicrobial activity and these forms of silver could cause a condition known as Argyria, a build-up of silver in the body that leads to permanent discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes. Colloidal technology has advanced in leaps and bounds since the late 1930s. It is now possible to produce a 'true' electro-colloid of pure silver without using any stabilizers, acids or solvents. The patented SilverloidTM process creates a 'true' colloidal suspension of 99.999%-pure silver in purified deionized water. 'True' Colloidal Silver is completely safe, and mild enough to drop
into the eyes and ears of infants suffering from conjunctivitis or middle-ear infections. True colloids of 99.999%-pure silver will not cause Argyria (though all medicinal silver compounds should carry this warning on the
label). Most products on the market today are still manufactured from mild silver protein When buying a Colloidal Silver liquid product for internal use, it's
important to check the label for it's ingredients. If the list contains anything more than 99.999%-pure silver and deionized water, keep walking. If the color is anything but a pale golden-yellow, move on. If the bottle has no
ingredients listed, it's probably based on mild silver protein or ionic silver. [Warning! To sum up; if the ingredients contain anything but silver and deionized water; ask yourself why they need these extra ingredients, - and move on! Concentration and particle size of the silver in the colloidal suspension are the keys to a product's efficacy. This is one instance where 'less is more'. The optimum concentration (established by the Colloid Research
Foundation) is 10-20 ppm (parts per million) with a particle size of 0.005 to 0.015 microns for products intended for therapeutic use. Nature's Balance received a pleasant surprise in mid-June. Marcus

In this first issue, however we want to address a question that we are asked on a regular basis.
"What is the difference between chlorella and products such as spirulina or 'Super Blue-Green Algae' (SBGA) or aphanizomenon flos-aquae to address it by it's formal name has become popular in recent years as spirulina, another blue-green has fallen slightly from favor. Both 'SBGA' and spirulina are cyanobacteria; bacteria that have evolved an ability to produce chlorophyll in the presence of sunlight and carbon dioxide; i.e. they are photosynthetic.
Chlorella, on the other hand is a 'true' plant (having cell-walls that consist of cellulose). 1. There is no such thing as a 'pristine environment' This description is used by more than one company to describe the growing conditions around Lake Klamath. The fact that environmental scientists analyze core samples of polar ice to determine historical levels of atmospheric heavy metal concentrations, would indicate that no such place exists on Earth today! [Pesticide run-off into Lake Klamath is also a growing concern for Klamath locals - Ed.] 2. Cyanobacteria have the potential, as do all bacteria to produce 'endotoxins' as a by-product of metabolism and decomposition. (Plants do not produce endotoxins.) Although 'SBGA' purveyors state that no toxic blooms have ever been recorded in Lake Klamath, official records suggest otherwise. Some endotoxins given off by 'blue-greens' have been labeled 'VFDF' or 'very fast death factors'! (This refers to the fact that animals have died within minutes of consuming toxic strains.) While history records that many native peoples have included algae and seaweeds in their diets, there is not one single record of native American-Indians consuming the aphanizomenon flos-aquae from Lake Klamath. Perhaps there's a good reason for this. 3. 'SBGA' is freeze-dried once it has been harvested. Some chlorellas are also dried in this way. However, research has shown that freeze-drying can preserve contaminating bacteria in a state of suspended animation. Rehydration testing has shown that a large percentage of these bacteria are still 'viable'. Nature's Balance Chlorella is dried using the most sophisticated and up-to- date 'instant-velocity' spray drying technology. As this technology involves a multi-million dollar investment, few producers have installed this equipment. This system not only kills any bacteria that are present, but preserves the nutritional and therapeutic properties of chlorella for a longer shelf-life and potency. 4. In personal communication with physicians that have had an
opportunity to evaluate patient responses to 'SBGA', some concerns have been voiced that this product may complicate parasitic infections. None were able to determine whether the 'SBGA' was a direct source of parasites (which
is a possibility considering it's harvesting size), or whether it was simply Chlorella is a single-celled 'eukaryote', meaning that it has a true nucleus. SBGA and spirulina are multi-celled 'procaryotes' that have no true nucleus. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid), the nucleic acids that are the blueprint and the regenerative 'chemicals of life' respectively, are produced in the nucleus of chlorella. Chlorella contains more RNA by weight than any other known source on Earth, and these nucleic acids form the central component of Chlorella Growth Factor or CGF. It is CGF that is responsible for many of the unique health benefits that scientific and medical researchers have reported. CGF is only found in chlorella species. In terms of chlorophyll content, chlorella is without parallel. Containing up to 7 % by weight when cultivated in favorable conditions, chlorella contains more of this vital dietary component than any other source on Earth. It contains 5 - 10 times that found in spirulina and an astonishing 35 times the content of alfalfa, from which chlorophyll is extracted commercially. The most significant difference between these three algae is the
amount of scientific attention that has been paid to chlorella. Chlorella has been researched by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Carnegie Institute, the Pasteur Institute and NASA. It has also been the subject of medical Spirulina and 'SBGA' do not possess the cellulose cell-wall
structure of chlorella that has been shown to be so valuable in adsorbing and expelling environmental toxins from the gastrointestinal tract. It is this feature, along with the unique and wonderful CGF that put chlorella head
and shoulders above the others and make it deserving of it's title "King of the Algae". As a footnote, it is important that chlorella users understand the difference between chlorella pyrenoidosa (as per Nature's
Balance) and other commercially-marketed chlorella species such as chlorella vulgaris. While other species contain many of the valuable components found in chlorella pyrenoidosa, they do NOT contain 'sporopollenin' the unique
carotene-like polymer that has been identified as the element which binds and removes hydrocarbon toxins such as DDT, Kepone and PCBs. Silicon Detoxification A growing number of ladies are contacting us regarding the use of chlorella as an aid to detoxifying silicon from the body as a resulted of leaking or ruptured breast implants. We have little information available about the ability of chlorella to perform this task beyond suggestive evidence from 24-hour urine collection analyses from a number of sufferers that indicate elevated silicon excretion levels. Having read the authoritative book about this issue; 'The Silicon Breast Implant Controversy' by Frank B. Vasey, M.D., and Josh Feldstein (Contact Jackie Slaughter at 1-904 968 0521 to buy a copy ($25.43)), one thing has become very apparent. The hardening of breast tissue surrounding the implant envelopes appears to be a build up of macrophages that are systematically tearing down the outer silicon polymer, thus weakening the structure until rupture occurs. As chlorella has been proven to stimulate interferon production in the body, thus encouraging the production and mobility of macrophages, it is advisable that only those ladies who have undergone explantation consider taking chlorella.
